Hundreds of thousands of dollars in improvements have happened at Odessa’s Neighborhood Parks thanks to citizen’s monthly donation of one dollar on their City utility bills.
The Parks Foundation Dollar Donation Program was created to help fund improvements at Odessa’s parks and recreation facilities. Since the utility dollar donation program began in July of 2007 Odessa’s children are climbing, playing and swinging on new equipment at four of Odessa’s neighborhood parks.
Renovations were completed in the spring of 2011 at Murry Fly and Western Manor Parks and in the spring of 2012 San Jacinto and O’Conner Park's facelifts were complete. Climbing features, spring riders and spinning riders are some of the exciting new elements introduced at the parks. In addition to the playground equipment artificial turf was installed to create a safer environment for children at play.
Future plans being considered include a ‘tot lot’ (a playground designed for younger children) at Floyd Gwin Park and new playground equipment at Central Park.
